Ways to Relieve Nausea

It’s true that nausea and vomiting often go hand in hand, but it’s possible to take care of your nausea before your food starts to come up.

Our AFC Urgent Care Fountain City team highlights some effective ways to treat nausea below, so keep reading!

  • Here’s what to do: Stay hydrated. Because nausea upsets your stomach, eating food may temporarily make things worse. A diet of clear liquids can provide the sugar, salt and nutrients your body needs until you can eat solid food again. Drinking lots of water and some clear broth can help, as both are easy to digest and don’t put extra strain on your stomach or intestines.

  • What to do next: Try peppermint tea. Because peppermint tea contains a range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, it is used for a variety of ailments. One of its most well-known traditional uses is to reduce nausea by soothing your stomach.

  • What to do after: Consider ginger. Ginger is an herb that is widely used for its medicinal properties. One of the most common uses of ginger is as a remedy for nausea. You can try it raw, in tea form or by taking a capsule.

  • Something else to try: Prop your head up and avoid lying down. When you lie flat, gastric juices may rise and increase feelings of nausea and overall discomfort—especially if you have acid reflux or GERD.

  • Another at-home treatment: Try OTC antiemetic medication, like Dramamine. Antiemetic medications are anti-nausea drugs that can help to reduce feelings of nausea or vomiting.

  • Something else that can relieve nausea: Acupressure. Acupressure is an alternative medicine therapy that applies pressure to specific areas on the body to ease symptoms. The pressure point for nausea is on your inner wrist, about two and a half inches down, in between two large tendons. To ease nausea, press on this pressure point in a circular motion for a few minutes.

  • Action steps to take: Although nausea often isn’t serious, you should reach out to your doctor if your nausea or vomiting lasts more than two days for adults, more than 24 hours for children, or more than 12 hours for infants.

  • Doctor recommendations: Nausea and vomiting are both preventable! Avoid foods that are hard to digest, eat more smaller meals throughout the day instead of large ones, and drink water throughout the day.
