What Should I Do About My Seasonal Allergies?
As we start to open our windows again and welcome in the fresh spring air, seasonal allergies begin to make an appearance once more. If you experience mild to moderate seasonal allergy symptoms, this time of year might not be your favorite.
The trees and flowers start to bloom in early spring, and pollen is much more prevalent in the air. If this pollen makes you feel pretty miserable, you are not alone! More than 80 million people in the United States suffer from seasonal allergies. Our AFC Urgent Care Fountain City team explains more below, so check it out.
Why Do I React to Pollen?
Just like certain people are allergic to bee stings, peanut butter and shellfish, some people have allergic reactions to things that aren’t inherently dangerous. Certain people’s immune systems can mistakenly recognize things like pollen as dangerous invaders, and so their bodies work hard to get rid of the substance immediately.
When you come into contact with things like pollen, your body starts to produce histamine and other chemicals to help eliminate it from your body. This process is what produces the itchy, watery eyes and runny nose.
Classic Seasonal Allergy Symptoms
- Runny nose
- Itchy, watery or red eyes
- Sneezing
- Headache
How Can the AFC Team Help Me Feel Better?
Our goal any time someone walks in our doors is to offer a diagnosis and treatment plan! With seasonal allergies, this will look a little different. Unfortunately, seasonal allergies cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be managed. Certain people do outgrow allergies or experience a minimized reaction as they age, but it’s not a guarantee.
To best manage your symptoms, you need to know your triggers! We can discuss the situations that cause your allergies and come up with a best course of action for you. It will most likely include making plans to avoid going outside on high pollen count days and discussing the best types of allergy medications for you. While seasonal allergies are more of a nuisance than anything, it is important to recognize the difference between allergies and a severe allergic reaction.
